Clarkston
Clarkston is a well-established suburban town with a strong residential character, centred on its town centre and railway station. Its distinctive identity is shaped by traditional sandstone properties, mature tree-lined streets, attractive green spaces and a high-quality residential environment. The town benefits from a wide range of services and facilities, including schools, healthcare provision, shops, leisure opportunities and community facilities, while its vibrant town centre serves as a focus for retail, business, community and leisure activity. Strong transport connectivity, extensive parks, open spaces and wider green networks contribute to a strong sense of place, support the principles of local living, and provide valuable opportunities for recreation, active travel and biodiversity, helping to maintain a high quality of life for residents.
Future development in Clarkston will be centred on the delivery of the Clarkston South Growth Area, providing a significant opportunity to create a high-quality mixed community with new homes, including affordable housing, alongside supporting infrastructure, active travel links and blue and green networks. Growth will be carefully planned and integrated with existing communities, while opportunities within the existing urban area will focus on regeneration and the efficient use of land and buildings. Development should support the continued vitality of the town centre, enhance biodiversity and green infrastructure, strengthen walking, wheeling and cycling connections, and reinforce Clarkston’s role as a sustainable, well-connected and attractive place to live.
